Turning Your Bedroom Green With Organic Mattresses

If a friend recently told you they are going green in the bedroom, you might initially think they’re headed to the hardware store to buy green paint. The simple reality, though, is that they probably mean something completely different. What they really mean when they say that they are going green with their bedroom is that they are replacing their mattress with an eco-friendly, organic mattress. They may even be choosing green-friendly linens to match their mattress choice.

Most people are unaware that they can extend their ‘Go Green’ efforts to their bedrooms with organic mattresses. Therefore are surprised when their friends or family members present them with such a statement. Going green is just for energy consumption purposes, right? Not in this case.
You might then wonder, “Where can you get an organic mattress?” Organic mattresses can be found and purchased from some mattress stores. They can also be found and purchased on the internet. If you’re shopping online, though, be sure to read reviews carefully, because you want top quality organic materials before you actually buy.

Your next question might be, “What bedframe holds an organic mattress?” Of course there is the typical metal bed frame that you can use for your organic mattress. Or, if you want a nice bed that matches the décor of your room and offers optimal storage, you can go with platform beds. Platform beds can be found at many stores that sell bed frames. Or, again, you can find a great variety of platform beds on the internet. Either way, make sure that the platform bed you order and the mattress that you order match in size. Many people have made the mistake of ordering the wrong size of bed for their mattress, especially if they are not ordered at the same time.

Going Organic in the Bedroom – Is There Really an Advantage?

Sure, we’ve switched to green cleaners for our floors, counters, bathrooms and dishes.  We look for organic ingredients for our meals.  Maybe we’ve even tried to pay more attention to the clothes we purchase and how they are made and what they are made from.  But organic mattresses?  Do they really offer any advantages?  Well, the answer is a loud “Yes!”

Consider that new products will give off the chemicals from which they are made.  Trace amounts of these chemicals are everywhere, and if our exposure is limited, there is not that much to worry about.  However, we spend a great deal of time in bed.  Some estimates indicate we spend as much as 25% of our life in a bed!  This is not limited exposure – it is recurring and extended exposure every night.

Next, consider that we are putting our body’s largest organ into contact with these chemical residues every night.  Our skin, our largest organ, absorbs chemicals almost like applying a skin cream.  This extended exposure is not healthy, and an organic mattress can be the answer to reducing this dangerous exposure.

But those concerned about healthier living or those with chemical sensitivities are not the only ones who may benefit from organic mattresses.  Those suffering from allergies often find that when they make the switch to an organic mattress (and often a platform bed in addition to the matress), they experience quick relief.  The platform bed elevates the sleeper from the floor, reducing their exposure to the dust and allergens that can gather in carpeting or other flooring.  But even further, many allergies are triggered by dust mite feces that gather on mattresses and in floors.  Organic mattresses do an excellent job of reducing and in some cases eliminating the effects of dust mites.

Going green in the bedroom can provide a lot of health benefits.

Organic Mattresses – Worth the Hype?

The organic movement has hit grocery stores and more. You probably know that pesticide-free foods are good for you in the sense that they don’t predispose you to cancer and other ailments. It makes sense to avoid ingesting pesticides. Does it make sense to avoid pesticides in your sleep materials, too?

Organic Mattress
It does. When you choose organic mattress or natural mattress, you are avoiding some of the industrial chemicals that can damage tissues. Pesticides have been implicated in the development of some types of cancers, and when you choose the safer natural mattresses, you are taking a proactive step to safeguard your health.

Sometimes, natural mattresses and organic mattresses are more expensive than their regular counterparts. Realize that, though you may pay more up front, you are ensuring a safer future for yourself.  Just like hybrid cars cost more and organic produce might be a little harder on your wallet, healthy mattress choices generally cost more, too.

This isn’t a reason to not buy organic and natural mattresses, though – you just need to be mindful. Some manufacturers tend to try to swindle you – they will hike up the price to an absurd degree because they know some people are willing to pay it. Compare your options before buying – you want to get the best mattress for your money, and when you pick the first thing you find, you aren’t as likely to end up with a good deal.

Remember that foam mattresses are important purchases – they affect how you sleep, which in turn affects your performance, health, and overall well-being. You don’t need to be extravagant, but you also don’t need to cut corners, either.  Know your price range and what you want, and you’ll be well on your way to selecting a mattress that is comfortable and good for your health.

What is an Organic Mattress?

Over the last decade, we’ve all heard about the health impacts of organic foods and drinks.  Pretty much everyone everywhere either recommends to use them, or at least agrees that organic items are good for you.  But did you know that it is not just food and drinks that can fall under the organic umbrella?  Clothes, health and beauty products, bedding, and even mattresses can now be labeled organic if they meet the proper requirements, meaning they must be made with non-toxic materials that are certified under the USDA’s guidelines.   While they may not be a global top seller like memory foam mattresses, organic mattresses still offer the comfort and support of their non-organic counterparts, and they also come with the peace of mind of knowing that you’re not in nightly contact with potentially harmful chemicals that other mattresses are made of.

There are lots of reasons to buy an organic mattress.  With a mattress that is certified as organic, you know you are getting a product that is good for both you and the environment.  There are no toxic chemicals or other synthetic materials in the fibers, springs, or any other part of your mattress, and none of these were used in the manufacturing process as well.  Organic mattresses are also hypo-allergenic, they help regulate your temperature to keep you comfortable while you sleep, they are sustainable and biodegradable, and they are naturally flame resistant.

Natural Memory Foam Mattress
Now, you might be thinking that there is no possible way that an organic mattress can be as comfortable as a traditional mattress.   Sadly for you, you are wrong.  In addition to all the great features described above, organic mattresses or natural memory foam mattress are known for being extremely comfortable, offering long-lasting support and durability so that you wake up feeling refreshed and rested for years to come.   Like regular mattresses, organic mattresses come in many sizes and styles, so if it’s a medium-firm California king you’re looking for, you will be able to find an organic alternative to suit you.

Organic products have become commonplace in our grocery stores, pharmacies, and other retailers.  Now that they’re becoming more mainstream, the options for purchasing organic anything are expanding, and mattresses and other bedding materials are no exception. If you want the absolute best for you and the environment, make sure organic mattresses are on your radar when it’s time to replace your bed.
